I have really been thinking about how to improve student success in my classrooms and the college's as a whole. I am excited to have a new program that will make it faster for students to move through pre-college and hopefully with more understanding.
--The FIGs seem like a wonderful way to bring our historically dysfunctional department together to talk about things that will truly improve learning. We are at a turning point right now & this grant is helping choose the right road to follow.
...we were concerned about the addition of requiring FIGs, CATs, Classroom Exchange as a part of the grant. During the first part of the Institute, I kept thinking "Oh God, now we have to do what else?" I thought my brain was going to blow. i now realize the importance of these to our overall success but I don't think we were made aware of it in the original grant workshops.
...every college should have a retreat for the entire faculty (fulltime & parttime) to go over changes, discuss FIGs, CATs, exchanges, etc. It is too much to include in a Pre-fall meeting.
--Coming to the project from ABE/GED it has been great to go back and forth between departments sharing the exciting changes that are happening.
--I think I will be better prepared/informed when as part of IBEST I "team teach" with math faculty.
...bringing some of your "experts" to the southwester corner of the state to make it easier for more faculty to attend workshops. Make those workshops open to ABE/GED as well as DevEd. We teach the same skills and sometimes the same students.
